Many countries in the Balkans are emerging from years of
civil war and are experiencing predictable difficulty as they
build new democratic governing institutions that typically
employ practices and structures from previously discredited
regimes that often reflect the nationalistic agendas of these
institutions.

The LDESP program also sends out a biweekly news update
that includes important political situations in the Balkans,
the status of democratic instituitions in these countries,
and reports on "security cooperation" efforts between
these countries and the US.

LDESP currently offers course on Kosovo (KFOR)
and is geared to prepare the participants to accomplish
the mission of promoting regional stability in
these countries. The LDESP syllabus makes extensive
use of lessons learned, draws on the expertise
of senior leaders and specialists from various
civilian agencies and authorities responsible
for stability and peace building, and attempts
to build situational awareness concerning events
that may impact the peackeeping missions/State

Challenges
of Peace Operations: Into the 21st Century
This independent report was presented by the Minister of Foreign
Affairs of Sweden to the UN. It continues the debate on peace operations
reflecting different national and international perceptions, complementing
the analyses and recommendation contained in the Brahimi Report.
