The Middle East has been the focus of U.S. security concerns for some time now. This initiative particularly recogizes the administration's war against terrorism and the urgent need improve security and foster democratic governments in the Middle East.

Biweekly News

The LDESP program also sends out a biweekly news update that includes important events related to the political situation in the region, the status of democratic instituitions in these countries, and reports on "security cooperation" efforts between these countries and the US.

The LDESP program offers an online course to prepare senior officers to execute the elements of stabilizing the emerging state of Iraq allowing for the development of a democratic government, dedicated to the preservation of the State. The online course, provides an overview of the history of Iraq, the culture, US engagement in Iraq, update on the security situation and threats therin, and the measures implemented to prepare Iraqis for self rule. Establishing the Rule of Law in Iraq (May 2003)
The USIP report linked above by Ray Salvatore Jennings suggests steps to ensure that post-conflict reconciliation and reconstruction in Iraq go forward successfully.

How to Build a Democratic Iraq June 2003
The Foreign Policy article linked above suggests that what follows the war in Iraq will be at least as important as the war itself. Nurturing democracy there after Saddam won't be easy. But it may not be impossible either.

Middle East Road Map
The document linked above is a performance-based and goal-driven roadmap with clear phases, timelines, target dates, and benchmarks. The destination is a final and comprehensive settlement of the Israel-Palestinian conflict by 2005, as presented in President Bush’s speech of 24 June, and welcomed by the EU, Russia and the UN in the 16 July and 17 September Quartet Ministerial statements.

Challenges of Peace Operations: Into the 21st Century
This independent report was presented by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sweden to the UN. It continues the debate on peace operations reflecting different national and international perceptions, complementing the analyses and recommendation contained in the Brahimi Report.
